Helping Your Baby Build Strength, Skills & Confidence, From Day One
When you become a parent, so many things feel big: emotions, responsibilities, even the tiny socks in the laundry pile. But one of the most powerful ways to support your baby’s growth is actually very small, and simple. It’s called tummy time.
So, what is it really?
Tummy time is placing your baby on their stomach while they’re awake and you’re close by. It’s gentle, often wobbly, sometimes fuss-filled and completely essential. Just a few minutes a day can spark physical strength, sensory development, confidence, and connection.
Why Tummy Time Matters More Than You’d Think
Think of it as your baby’s very first workout. It helps them develop strength in their neck, back, shoulders, and core. These muscles are key for lifting their head, rolling over, sitting, crawling and eventually taking those first bold steps.
It also does something quietly beautiful:
It teaches your baby about their body. How it moves. What balance feels like. How their arms help them push up and their hands help them reach. With every mini push-up, your little one is learning coordination, awareness, and confidence.
And yes, there’s a practical bonus. Tummy time helps prevent flat spots on the back of your baby’s head, which can happen because babies sleep on their backs (as they should, for safety). Giving them time on their tummy reduces pressure and helps their little skull form naturally.
Sensory Sparks & Seeing the World Differently
Babies see the world differently when they’re on their tummy. They gaze, reach, and explore from a new angle. That change boosts eye tracking, depth perception, and sensory discovery all foundations for brain development.
You’ll start to notice something beautiful as they get stronger: curiosity. You’ll see them engage, look around, try new things. Even in those short sessions, they’re growing not just physically but emotionally, too.
Starting Tummy Time: When & How
You can start tummy time from day one. Really. It doesn’t have to look perfect, and it certainly doesn’t have to last long just a few minutes at a time, a few times a day, is perfect.
Try placing your baby on your chest or across your lap. Lie down with them and let your heartbeat and voice be their comfort. Then, as they grow, move to a soft blanket on the floor with a rolled towel under their chest for support. Toss in some toys, a mirror, a smile, and let them explore.
By three months, aim for 20–30 minutes total spread across the day. But more than the minutes, watch the connection unfold. You’ll see tiny triumphs, little lifts, and moments that make your heart swell.
What If My Baby Doesn’t Love It?
Totally normal. Tummy time is tough for little muscles, and many babies fuss at first.
Here’s what helps:
- Start with super short sessions,1 to 2 minutes.
- Get face-to-face. Your baby loves looking at you more than anything else.
- Add gentle music, colourful books, or toys they can reach for.
- Try chest-to-chest tummy time when you’re reclining, it’s soothing and bonding.
Most of all: be patient. Don’t force it. Even a few seconds count. One day soon, your baby will surprise you by holding their head up proudly, and it’ll be because of these little moments.
Tiny Moments. Big Milestones.
Here’s a peek at what tummy time helps your baby reach:
| Baby’s Age | Tummy Time Triumphs |
|---|---|
| 0–2 months | Lifts head briefly, turns side to side |
| 2–3 months | Pushes up slightly on forearms |
| 4–5 months | Holds head steady, reaches with arms |
| 6 months+ | Rolls over, preps for crawling |
Tummy time isn’t a task. It’s a gift. It’s a moment for connection, growth, and joyful discovery. So lay down beside your little one, chat, giggle, sing, and watch them bloom. one wiggle, one push, one tummy minute at a time.
You’re doing something beautiful. And your baby is, too.
